Yellow Jacket Softball in rain delayed finals of HCAC Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.— The Defiance College Softball team has advanced to the Heartland Conference finals, facing Transylvania in a game that, if Defiance wins, will force a second championship game in the double-elimination tournament.

Rains came to the Indianapolis area, suspending play in the championship game until 9:00 a.m. (CST) tomorrow (5/8).

The Jackets (home team) are leading the Pioneers 7-6 in the top seventh inning with a runner on first and two outs. If they can close out game one, the second contest will immediately follow.

After going 2-0 on Friday, the Jacket lost their morning game against Transylvania 3-9, despite a 2-for-3 performance by freshman Kelsey Sugg that included a double and an RBI. Kelly VanderHorst went 1-for-1 with an RBI in the loss.

In game two on Saturday, the Jackets came back to win 8-5 over Anderson. Freshman Robin Diers got the win, throwing all seven innings and giving up just three earned runs on six hits. Kalette Peters led DC with a 2-for-3 game at the plate with two runs and an RBI. Sugg had another monster game with four RBI in a 2-for-4 performance. Kelly VanderHorst drove in another run in a 1-for-4 day.

The Jackets are now 25-15 on the season.
