DC Drops Hiram in Eight-Inning Thriller, Fall to Marian

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Defiance College softball team split its two games on Monday, March 10. The Jackets fell to Marian College in the opener 4-1, before rebounding with a 2-1 victory over Hiram College in eight innings.

DC managed just three hits against Marian as Tasha Stucke, Mallory Faling and Laurel Palk all reached base on singles. Palk would give the Jackets their only run of the game in the third inning, scoring on an error by the shortstop. Defiance was unable to capitalize on its scoring opportunities, stranding five runners in the game. Justine Johnston took the loss for DC, giving up four runs on six hits and striking out four in her seven innings of work.

The second game of the day proved to be a defensive battle as the two teams combined for only eight hits in the game. Robin Diers pitched the first five innings for the Jackets, giving up one run on three hits and fanning one batter. Amanda Auzins scored in the fourth inning to tie the game at one apiece.

Kelly Schnipke
Palk was placed on second base to start the eighth inning due to the international tie break rule. She moved to third base on Stucke’s bunt, before scoring the winning run on Faling’s fielder’s choice.

Kelly Schnipke got the win for DC, shutting out the Terriers over the last three innings. Defiance also got some help from the double-play combination of Stephanie Lieto and Tasha Stucke as the two helped turn double-plays in the third and sixth innings to help the Jackets get out of jams.

Defiance (2-2) returns to action on Wednesday, March 12 at the Rebel Spring Games, when it plays Heidelberg College at 9:00 a.m. and Husson College at 1:00 p.m.
