DEFIANCE, Ohio -- The Defiance College Yellow Jacket Softball team lost a doubleheader to Ohio Wesleyan University Thursday afternoon by the scores 6-1 and 9-6.
In the first game, DC was held hitless until the top of the fourth inning when Monica Sigurdson singled to left center with one down. After a sacrifice bunt, intentional walk, and hit batsman, DC had the bases loaded with two outs, but could not bring anyone around to score. In the bottom half of the fifth inning, Ohio Wesleyan went on an offensive tear. Pitcher Justine Johnston found herself in a bases-loaded jam with nobody out, but was able to get two force outs at home. However, Johnston was unable to get the final out of the inning until after surrendering three consecutive hits, bringing around five runs to the plate. Jessica Smith scored in the top of the sixth, but the Bishops recovered that run in the bottom half of the inning.
In the nightcap, the Jackets found themselves in a deep hole early, as the Bishops score one run in the first, two in the second, and five in the fourth, putting DC down 8-0. pitcher Brittany Sims ended her day in the fourth inning, after giving up six runs (four earned) in 3.1 innings of work. Entering the top of the fifth, the Jackets managed to put together a four-run rally, capped off by a bases-loaded triple by Kayla Crager. Unfortunately, DC was only able to pick up one more run before the game was over.
On the day, Crager went 3-for-7 with three RBIs, while Smith went 2-for-6 with two runs scored. Johnston gave up five earned runs in five innings in the first game of the doubleheader.
DC, now 9-7 on the year, hosts Alma College Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
