Jackets Split Today's Contests at Rebel Spring Games

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Defiance College softball team split its two games on the day for the third time this season, defeating Heidelberg College (5-3) before falling to Husson College (4-1) on Wednesday, March 12.

In the Heidelberg game Defiance got a pair of needed insurance runs in the fifth, which turned out to be the difference in the game as DC grabbed the 5-3 victory.

In the second inning Stephanie Lieto broke a scoreless tie, scoring on a fielder’s choice by Aarika Davis. Davis knocked in her second run of the day in the fourth inning, driving in Marah Robinson who reached on a triple to center to start the inning. The Jackets would add another run in the fourth, when Mallory Faling drew a bases loaded walk to plate Katie Bowman and give DC a 3-0 advantage.

Robinson got the scoring started for the Jackets in the fifth as her second triple of the game scored Lieto.

Elizabeth Petrie followed up Robinson’s triple with a single in her only at bat of the game to drive in Robinson and give DC a 5-0 lead. Heidelberg would tack on three runs in the sixth, but it would not be enough as Defiance would pull out the victory.

Justine Johnston moved to 2-1 on the season with the victory, giving up three runs on eight hits and recording four strikeouts in her third complete game of the season. The Jackets scored five runs, despite mustering only five hits on the game. Robinson finished the game 2-for-3, tallying two triples as well as driving in one run. Davis finished with two RBI’s on 1-for-3 hitting, while Lieto scored two runs after reaching base twice via walks.

In the second game of the day DC was unable to capitalize on its scoring opportunities, leaving eight runners stranding in its loss to Husson. Robinson drove in the only run of the game for Defiance, while going 2-for-3 for the second consecutive game. Laurel Palk also had two hits for the Jackets, while Amanda Auzins, Davis, Faling and Tasha Stucke each recorded hits for Defiance.

Robin Diers took the loss for DC, giving up four runs in her three innings of work. Kelly Schnipke threw three shutout innings in relief, striking out two batters and giving up four hits and a walk.

Defiance (3-3) will wrap up its time at the Rebel Spring Games on Thursday, March 12. The Jackets will play Simpson at 9:00 a.m. before facing Mount Union at 11:00 a.m.
