Defiance vs Tiffin: Game 1 / Game 2

DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College Softball team could not pull out a win its doubleheader against Tiffin University, falling 8-1 in the first game and 5-2.

Facing the blistering cold and snowy elements, the Jacket offense was held in check, managing only one run on nine hits. The run came in the second on an RBI bunt single by Danielle Skaziak to tie the game at one. The Dragons then began to slowly widen the margin, adding a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings.

Amanda Auzins put up five hits on the day
The major damage to DC came in the sixth when Stacy Lucas knocked in a grand slam to put Tiffin up by seven. The 8-1 deficit proved to be too much for the Jackets to overcome as the game ended by the same score.

Amanda Auzins was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game while Renee Steffen added two hits. Justine Johnston was responsible for the eight runs in the game on 10 hits.

The second game started off in Tiffin’s favor as the Dragons scored in the first inning and added another in the third. DC was then able to get the bats going, tying the game in the bottom half of the frame off of RBI hits from Auzins and Melanie Bushman.

The score remained tied at two until the sixth when Ashli Breau went yard for a two-RBI shot to break the stalemate. The Dragons added another score in the inning and held on to the three-run lead into the bottom of the seventh. DC had an opportunity to put some runs on the board, getting the first two runners on. Unfortunately for the Jackets, the next three batters were unable to plate any of the runners as the game ended with DC stranding the two.

Auzins had two more hits in the game with an RBI while Skaziak also chipped in with two hits in the leadoff spot. Robin Diers was charged with five runs in 5 2/3 innings, giving up eight hits while striking out four.

Defiance (9-15, 2-0 HCAC) will keep its six-game homestand going when the Jackets host Anderson University Thursday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
