DC Softball splits with TU
DEFIANCE, OhioThe DC Softball team (22-14, 11-3) lost game one 0-4 before taking the second contest 7-6 against the Transylvania University Pioneers (21-10-1, 11-3) in dramatic fashion.
DC was able to get only three runs from pitcher junior pitcher Amy Meikel. After taking the 1-0 lead in the first both teams were head scoreless until TU racked up three more runs in the top of the seventh.
Alicia Allen recorded the loss giving up nine hits for four runs.
TU jumped to a 4-0 lead as they closed the top of the second inning but the Jackets saw the scoreboard for the first time when pinch runner Laurel Palk scored on a Monica Sigurdson single. Jessica Smith’s single scored Erica Franks and just moments later Sigurdson crossed home plate when Kalette Peters grounded out to second base. Two more runs were scored in the third inning to give the Jackets a 5-4 lead.
The Jackets defense took over and did not allow runs in the third and fourth innings. TU’s Annie Rardin tied the game at five in the fifth inning and Emily Safstrom’s run gave the lead back to the Pioneers.
The Jackets began to battle back when Kacy VanderHorst saw home on a Kelsey Sugg single. Frank’s single brought in Moreo to give the Jackets the game winning run.
TU was held scoreless in the seventh and were limited to a single hit.
The Jackets end the regular season as the projected number two seed for next weekend’s HCAC tournament to be held in Indianapolis, Ind.
