LEXINGTON, Ky. The Defiance College Softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Transylvania University by the scores 2-1 and 5-4.
In the first game, DC got on the scoreboard first on an RBI triple by Renee Steffen in the top of the second, knocking in Kayla Crager to make the score 1-0. Justine Johnston held Transy scoreless through three until the Pioneers would tie the game at one in the bottom of the fourth, as both teams were locked in a pitcher’s duel. Neither team could manage a run through seven, sending the game into extra innings. After DC could not score in the top half of the eighth, Transy found themselves in the driver’s seat when the Pioneers had a runner at third with one out. Johnston was almost able to get out of the jam when Erin Skelton singled up the middle to bring in the winning run.
In the second game, DC again scored first, when Jessica Smith homered in the top of the first to put the Jackets up 1-0. Defiance would add three more runs in the top of the third, highlighted by a two-RBI double by Kelsey Sugg to put DC up 4-0. However, things went the Pioneers’ way in the bottom half of the inning, as Transy put up a four-spot in the inning to tie the game at four. Alicia Allen would hold the Pioneers scoreless through the next three innings. In the bottom of the seventh, Transy would break the Jackets’ hearts again with another RBI single to win the game by one.
Kelsey Sugg went 3-for-6 over the two games with two RBIs, while Melanie Bushman 3-for-7 with a run scored.
DC, now 23-13 (6-4 HCAC), heads to Cincinnati to take on Mount St. Joseph tomorrow afternoon at noon.
