Defiance vs Transylvania: Game 1 / Game 2

DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College Softball team had its nine-game conference win streak snapped by Transylvania University as the Jackets won the first game 6-4 but fell 12-2 in the rubber match.

Transy got on the board first with an RBI single in the first inning, but DC was able to retaliate in a hurry with a three-run opening inning to take a two-run lead. Amanda Auzins extended her hitting streak to 12 games with an RBI double in the frame. The Jackets added two more runs in the game with RBI singles off of the bats of Monica Sigurdson and Laurel Palk in the third.

Amanda Auzins has now hit in 13 straight
Transy mounted a comeback in the fifth as the Pioneers rallied for three runs in the inning, cutting the Jacket lead to one. DC was able to escape the top half with the lead, while adding an insurance run in the bottom half of the fifth. The lead would hold as the Pioneers went three up and three down in the last two innings.

Justine Johnston gained the win, giving up four runs on four hits with eight strikeouts. Auzins and Melanie Bushman each had two hits in the game.

The second game saw a much more pronounced offensive showing on the part of Transylvania, as the Pioneers jumped out to a six-run lead after two innings. After holding Transy scoreless in the third, the Pioneers picked up three more runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings en route to the shortened game.

Defensive miscues also helped contribute to the Pioneers score, as five DC errors in the game led to five unearned runs.

Robin Diers was touched up for six runs (four earned) on seven hits. Kelsey Sugg and Jessica Smith each had RBI hits for DC in the game. Auzins, who went 1-for-2, now has a 13-game hitting streak.

Defiance (18-16, 9-1 HCAC) will look to get back on track Thursday when the team heads to Bluffton for a 3:30 matchup.
