Defiance vs Tri-State: Game 1 / Game 2

DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College Softball team had its three-game win streak snapped its doubleheader against Tri-State University, as the Jackets fell to the Thunder 2-1 and 17-8.

DC struck first in the opening inning on a RBI single up the middle by Melanie Bushman, bringing in Aarika Davis to score. The Jackets’ one-run lead lasted an inning and a half, when Sallie Richardson gave Tri-State the lead with a two-RBI single in the third.

Melanie Bushman put up three hits on the day
Unfortunately for DC, the offense stalled as the Jackets were held to only one hit over the course of the rest of the game. Defiance had an opportunity to start a rally in the fourth, loading the bases with two outs. The rally fell short when the Jackets struck out and were unable to get anyone on base for the rest of the game.

Bushman had two of DC’s three hits in the game with the Jackets’ lone RBI. Justine Johnston took the hard-luck loss, giving up the two runs on three hits and five walks with four strikeouts.

In the second game, defensive miscues put Defiance in an early hole, as three errors led to eight runs in the first inning. The Jackets were able to cut the deficit in half in the bottom half of the inning, putting up a four spot. The Thunder offense would not let up, as Tri-State plated eight runs over the next two innings, while DC was only able to retaliate with one run in the second and three in the fourth. With the eight-run lead held by Tri-State, the game was called in the fifth.

Robin Diers was touched up for 12 runs in the game on nine hits, pitching 1.1 innings. Kayla Crager came on in relief, going an inning and charged with four runs. Julie Miller pitched the last 2 2/3 of the game, holding the Thunder scoreless on two hits.

Kelsey Sugg picked up two hits and two RBIs in the game, while Amanda Auzins and Stephanie Lieto each had a hit and two RBIs as well.

Defiance (9-13) will resume the HCAC season on April 6, hitting the road to take on Hanover. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
