DC Softball splits doubleheader with Tri-State
Nick Williams, Assistant SID
DEFIANCE, Ohio -- The Defiance College Softball team wins the first and drops the second of a twin-billing against Tri-State University Tuesday afternoon by the scores 2-0 and 11-2, respectively.
In the first game, Robin Mason scored the first run of the game in the second inning on a wild pitch while pinch-running for Monica Sigurdson. That proved to be all Justine Johnston would need, as the freshman pitched a complete game shutout, giving up only four hits while striking out a season-high seven batters. Kelsey Sugg went 2-for-3 in the game with a run scored.
In the second game, things started off well for DC but quickly got out of hand. The Yellow Jackets took an early 2-0 lead on an RBI single by Melanie Bushman, who would later score in the inning on a passed ball. However, in the bottom half of the inning, the Thunder came out swinging, scored five runs in the inning, capped off by a three-run homerun by Erin Waters.
Brittany Sims, who started the game, would come out after giving up a lead-off in the bottom of the third. Justine Johnston would enter in her place, but could not find the same magic that she had in the first game. The Thunder would end up scoring four more runs in the inning and two more in the bottom of the fourth before being called after the top of the fifth.
Sugg and Alicia Allen were perfect from the plate, as both went 3-for-3 in the game. Sims’s day ended with six earned runs in two innings of work. Johnston gave up five runs in 1.1 innings.
DC travels to Indiana tomorrow to begin HCAC play, taking on Manchester College at 3:00 p.m.
