Tri-State Snaps DC's Winning Streak at Five Games

ANGOLA, Ind. - Defiance had its five-game winning streak snapped by Tri-State University on Friday, April 4. The Jackets lost the opener of the doubleheader 7-6, before falling 9-1 in the night cap.

Vicki Hayes hit an inside-the-park homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning to complete the comeback for Tri-State as Justine Johnston lost for the first time in her last four starts. The junior hurler fell to 5-4 on the season with loss, surrendering six earned runs on 12 hits.

DC wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, scoring a run in the opening inning of the game to take an early 1-0 lead. Laurel Palk lead off the game with a bunt single, before scoring on sac fly by Marah Robinson.

Tri-State would knot the game at one apiece with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but Defiance would respond with five runs over its next three innings. Robinson, who finished with a career-high four RBI’s in the game,went yard for the fourth time this season as her three-run homer put the Jackets up 4-1.

DC added to its lead in the fourth as Amanda Auzins’ double scored Tasha Stucke, before Aarika Davis scored on a wild pitch to put the Jackets up 6-1 heading into the bottom half of the fourth inning. The Thunder tied the game with a five-run outburst in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on two Defiance errors.

Auzins led DC with two hits in the game, while also scoring a run and driving in a run. Robinson finished the game 1-for-2 with one run and one walk, while Palk led Defiance with two runs scored in the game.

The Jackets were unable to get the bats going in the nightcap as Tri-State jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. DC scored its only run of the game in the fourth as Nicole Diers drove in Davis, who led off the inning with a triple. The Thunder added two more runs in the sixth to close out the scoring for the game.

Defiance (8-9) will return to action on Sunday, April 6, when it opens up HCAC play with a doubleheader at Rose-Hulman. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
