Five Yellow Jacket Track Athletes Qualify for All-Ohio Championships

DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College will be sending a group of five athletes to the All-Ohio Track and Field Championships held on the campus of Otterbein College in Westerville on Saturday, Feb. 10. In order to qualify for the competition, athletes must be ranked among the top-12 performers among all Division III athletes in their respective event.

The Yellow Jackets will be represented by freshmen Samantha Higdon and Jessica Lipstraw on the women’s side, while juniors Trevor Matuszak and Matt Fosnaugh will be joined by freshman Mark Leugers in competing for the men’s team.

Higdon and Lipstraw will each compete in the weight throw competition starting at 3:45 pm. Higdon is seeded eighth and has posted three top-10 finishes this season including a third-place showing this past weekend in the Anderson Indoor Invitational. Lipstraw has also been impressive in several events early into her rookie campaign and will be seeded 11th at this event.

Matuszak will be seeded fourth in the weight throw.

Matuszak will also compete in the weight throw and will start his competition at 2:30 pm. The junior is seeded fourth in the event and has already turned in a pair of top-five finishes this season and posted the second-best throw in DC’s indoor history.

Fosnaugh and Leugers will round at the field for Defiance as Fosnaugh will be seeded 10th in the pole vault starting at 12:30 pm and Leugers will carry the 12th seed into action in the long jump at noon.

Athletes finishing among the top eight in their respective competitions will be named All-Ohio.
