Lady Jackets Dominate Throwing Events at Beaver Invitational

BLUFFTON, Ohio – Defiance recorded five first-place finishes and numerous top-five efforts on Saturday en route to a strong second-place showing as a team at the Bluffton Beaver Invitational. Among the day’s highlights were firsts in the shot put, hammer throw and javelin competitions.

Laura Derov led the charge for Defiance in the shot with a winning toss of 19.96 meters and Kim Taylor, Amanda Tooley and Samantha Higdon took third, fourth and fifth in the competition.

Defiance nearly duplicated the effort in the discuss as Jessica Lipstraw, Taylor and Higdon ended second, fourth and fifth in the event.

The hammer toss and javelin competitions also went the way of the Yellow Jackets as Higdon won the hammer throw with a toss of over 119 feet and Derov’s throw of over 78 feet won the javelin event.

Higdon won the hammer throw and took third in the shot.

Defiance picked up two more firsts as Kristyn Tooley won the triple jump and the team of Kristin Goldstein, Mollie Patterson, Aubry Schafer and Tooley turned in a winning time of 53:34 in the 4x100 relay.

Goldstein also took second in the 100 meter dash and Schafer ended second in the 400 meter run.

Defiance will be back in action on April 5 when it hosts the Yellow Jacket Open.
