Eight Jackets Earn All-HCAC Honors

GREENWOOD, Ind. – The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference announced its Track & Field awards on Thursday, May 1, 2008. The Defiance College track & field team had eight individual earn distinctions from the conference, following their performances at the HCAC Championships on April 25-26.

DC swept the HCAC’s Most Outstanding Freshman Athlete awards, as Holly Stein and Austin Trivett took home the top honors in that category. Stein scored 28 points in the meet and became the Jackets first Most Outstanding Field Athlete award winner since 2004, winning both the discus and the javelin and earning a second-place finish in the shot put. Trivett complemented his Most Outstanding Freshman honors with an All-HCAC honorable mention selection, after scoring in all four of his events.

Five other Defiance athletes earned All-HCAC honors after claiming event titles at the HCAC Championships. Trevor Matuszak won his second consecutive hammer throw title, with a school record toss of 193-06.00.

The senior automatically qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, recording the top throw in Div. III this season. Brad Zarembski also garnered his second-straight event title, clearing 6-06.75 to win the high jump.

DC swept the top honors in the pole vault as Matt Fosnaugh and Emily Cole each earned titles last weekend. Fosnaugh cleared 13-09.25 to win the men’s pole vault, scoring in the event for his fourth time at the HCAC Championships. Cole set a new school record in the women’s pole vault, clearing 9-08.00 on her way to first place.
