DEFIANCE, Ohio The Defiance College track and field team garnered two event titles, while also having five athletes place in the top four in their respective event at the Div. III All-Ohio Indoor Championships held at Otterbein College.
Trevor Matuszak and Eric Swartz each grabbed individual titles, helping the DC men to a fifth-place finish. The Jackets finished with 32.33 points in one the top team performance’s in school history. Matuszak, who is making a habit of breaking his own school-record, won the men’s weight throw with a meet record toss of 58-11.25. His record mark was over two feet farther than the previous record, while also defeating the nearest competitor by over eight feet. Swartz won the men’s high jump, clearing 6-05.00 to match his career-best.
Brad Zarembski and Nic Niehaus each garnered fourth place finishes as Zarembski cleared 6-03.25 in the men’s high jump, while Niehaus had a personal-best toss of 45-03.75. Dan Orta was seventh in the shot put with his toss of 42-10.75 and Matt Fosnaugh tied for eighth in the pole vault after clearing 13-05.25.
Samantha Higdon led the women, finishing second in the women’s weight throw with a toss of 45-10.75 and helping the Lady Jackets earn 12 points during the meet. Laura Derov was sixth in the shot put with a toss of 37-03.25 and ninth in the weight throw, while Jessica Lipstraw earned an eighth place finish in the weight throw with her toss of 41-01.00.
The Jackets will travel to Ada, Ohio next Friday, February 22 to participate in the Ohio Northern Friday Night Series Meet.
