John Hartpence

John Hartpence is in his first season at the helm of Defiance College’s track and field and cross country programs after taking over the position from former DC head coach Matt Lydum. He will take over the reigns of the distance and hurdle events, while also working with athletes in the pole vault.
Hartpence comes to Defiance after spending the past seven years as the head men’s and women’s track and field coach at Dickinson College. Under Hartpence’s guidance the Red Devils’ women’s track program garnered six Centennial Collegiate Conference championships, while the men’s program earned five runner-up finishes.
Along with the team successes that Hartpence’s squads experienced, the Red Devils also piled up the individual honors, which totaled 65 individual conference championships and eight NCAA All-Americans. Hartpence was also voted as the USTFCCAA Mid-East Women’s Indoor Coach of the Year in both 2002 and 2003.
Hartpence earned his undergraduate degree in physical education from Cortland College, before completing a master’s of science degree in health and human performance from the University of Montana in 1996. He is certified as a Level II Track and Field Coach for throwing and jumping events.
Hartpence currently resides in Defiance.

Matt Lydum

Matt Lydum is in his fourth season as a Track & Field coach at Defiance College.
Lydum came to DC from Tucson, Arizona were he is completing his third year of doctoral studies while serving as a peak performance instructor at the University of Arizona. He also volunteered as a youth track and field coach while progressing in his studies and teaching at U. of A.
Prior to coming to Arizona, Lydum was the head track and field coach at San Francisco State University, where he tutored several All-Americans, individual conference champions and school-record holders. Under his leadership, the Gators won the 1998 NCAC championships.
Lydum was honored as the conference and regional coach of the year, and was a United States Olympic Committee representative to the International Olympic Academy in 1998.
Also at SFSU, Lydum was instrumental in the development of a new international-caliber track and field complex for the Gators' campus, completed in 2000. Lydum started his coaching career as the head track coach and assistant football coach at Pendleton (Oregon) High School before returning to his alma mater (Western Oregon) as a graduate assistant track and field instructor and coach.
He earned his master's degree in Education with an emphasis in Sports Studies from Western Oregon State College in 1993. Lydum completed his undergraduate work at WOSC in 1990 with a degree in Teaching Language Arts.
Lydum is certified as a Level II instructor in sprints/hurdles, jumps and throws. He also tutors other coaches in the USATF Level I instructor training course.
Lydum and his wife Randi have two children, Max and Hazel.

Nick Tabacca
Assistant Coach

Nick Tabacca has been recently been hired to join the coaching staffs for the track and field as well as football programs. Tabacca will serve as the Assistant Coach for the Track & Field team.
Tabacca comes to Defiance after spending the past two years as a Defensive Graduate Assistant and Assistant Defensive Line Coach with Ball State University. Tabacca was directly responsible for coaching the nose guards on the defensive line.
Prior to accepting the position at Ball State, Tabacca was a four-time letter winner with the Cardinals from 2000-2005, including the school’s 2001 MAC West Tri-Champion squad. The Columbus, Ohio, native excelled on and off the field with Ball State, earning an undergraduate degree in history in 2004, before completing his master’s degree in business administration in the summer of 2006.
Tabacca and his wife, Alyssa, are currently residing in Defiance.

John McColl

| John McColl enters his third season among the coaching ranks after a stellar career on the trails and track at DC. A three-time all-conference performer in cross country, McColl was named HCAC Freshman of the Year in both Track and Cross Country. He was named all-conference three times on the track by winning the 800 meters twice and helping the 1600 meter team win the 2003 HCAC title. McColl was named conference runner of the week six times and holds school records in the 3000, the 1500, the 1000, and the 800 meters.
The Stryker, Ohio native was named the Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year by Defiance College in the spring of 2005.

Quanni Franklin
Assistant Coach

Quanni Franklin enters her second year as Assistant Coach for the DC Track & Field team.
Franklin has experience in the HCAC, having graduated in 2006 from Manchester College after a distinguished career as a Spartan student-athlete. She lettered all four years and was a three-time HCAC Athlete of the Year for javelin and discus. In 2006, Franklin was the HCAC Field Events Athlete of the Year, as well as the Track & Field MVP for Manchester. In addition, she holds school records for discus and javelin and the HCAC record for javelin.
A native of Indianapolis, Franklin was a tri-athlete at Broad Ripple High School, lettering in basketball, softball, and track.
