DC Track & Field to Compete at HCAC Meet

DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College men’s and women’s track and field teams will participate in the HCAC Championships this weekend. The two-day event starts on Friday, April 25 on the campus of Anderson University.

Both the men and women will be looking to improve upon their fifth-place finishes a year ago. Head coach John Hartpence believes that improvement will be realized this season, “I think both squads should finish in the top three. The men and women both have the ability to finish second in the conference if our athletes step up to the challenge. “

The field events should continue to be strong for DC, after the men scored 62 points and the women 49.5 points in those events at last year’s HCAC Championships. This season should be no different as four Jackets, Laura Derov (shot put), Samantha Higdon (hammer throw), Trevor Matuszak (hammer throw) and Brad Zarembski (high jump), will be looking to defend their HCAC titles in their respective field events. The DC track and field team will also get points in the meet in a number of other events.

Perry will look for top three finishes in the 100m and 200m.

Ryan Perry, Eric Swartz and Austin Trivett are all expected to score in multiple events this weekend for DC. Perry will run in the 100m and 200m dashes, while Swartz should place high in the 110m hurdles, the high jump and the pole vault. Trivett, one of several freshman-of-the-year candidates for the Jackets, is scheduled to compete in the 110m hurdles, the high jump, the pole vault and the javelin. Matt Fosnaugh comes into the meet ranked fourth in the conference in the pole vault, while Nic Neihaus is ranked sixth in the hammer throw.

Two Lady Jackets will aim for HCAC freshman-of-the-year honors in the meet. Holly Stein comes into the meet ranked second in the HCAC in both the shot put and the discus and will also be looking for a top three finish in the javelin, while Alex Thiel is expecting to score in the pole vault, long jump, high jump and the triple jump. Amanda Tooley comes into the meet ranked in the top three in both the shot put and the hammer throw, while Kristin Goldstein hopes to score in the 100m and 200m dashes. Emily Cole (pole vault), Bria Gendron (high jump), Julie Kern (high jump), Courtney Lantz (800m and pole vault) and Jessica Lipstraw (discus) are all in position to score in their respective events this weekend.

The two-day event is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 25. The meet will resume on Saturday, April 26 at 10:00 a.m.
