Nine Jackets to Compete in All-Ohio Championships

DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College will send nine athletes to All-Ohio Indoor Championships held on this weekend at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio.

Samantha Higdon, Trevor Matuszak and Brad Zarembski headline the group from DC that has qualified to participate in the event. Higdon comes into the event ranked number one in the women’s weight throw as her best throw of 48-08.75 is nearly three feet farther than the second-ranked thrower. Matuszak is also ranked first in the weight throw as his school-record toss of 58-02.00 puts him in place to shatter the current meet record of 56-08.00. Zarembski, ranked number one in the men’s high jump, enters the meet just short of the meet record as his jump of 6-07.00 is less than an inch below the record.

Laura Derov and Jessica Lipstraw round out the women’s participants with Derov competing in both the shot put and the weight throw, while Lipstraw enters the weekend ranked fifth in the weight throw.

Derov is one of two Jackets to qualify in two events.

Austin Trivett is scheduled to compete in both the 55m hurdles and the pole vault, having run 8.31 in the hurdles and cleared 13-05.00 in the pole vault. He will be joined in the pole vault by senior Matt Fosnaugh, who cleared 13-05.00 to earn a berth in his third-straight All-Ohio meet. Dan Orta will compete in the shot put after qualifying seventh, while Nic Niehaus qualified in the weight throw with a toss of 43-03.00.

The meet is scheduled to begin at noon on Saturday, February 16.
