Matuszak Earns HCAC Athlete of the Month Honor

GREENWOOD, Ind. –Trevor Matuszak (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford) has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference March Men’s Player of the Month. He is the fourth DC male athlete to earn the honor this year, while also marking the fifth time that a Defiance athlete has won the award during the 2007-08 school year.

The senior earned All-American honors with a second-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Matuszak placed second in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 14, shattering his own school record with a toss of 62-05.25. That mark topped the HCAC Indoor-best list by nearly 13 feet over his nearest competitor. It was the first time all year that the Ottawa Lake, Michigan native was beaten by a Division III opponent.

The senior standout has carried his success over to the outdoor season. Matuszak defended his hammer throw title at the Dick Small Invitational with a toss of 161-10. He also claimed first at the Bluffton Beaver Invitational with a throw of 167-10, earning him HCAC Field Athlete of the Week honors.

The track and field team will be back in action this weekend at the Manchester Invitational on Saturday, April 5.
