Youth Leads the Way for DC Track at Season Opener

ADA, Ohio – Defiance College kicked off its 2007 indoor season on Friday at Ohio Northern and the night was highlighted by several standout efforts by rookie Yellow Jacket performers.

The women excelled in the throwing competitions as a quartet of freshmen turned in stout performances in the shot put and weight throw events. Samantha Hidgon led the charge for Defiance by placing ninth in each event. Higdon notched the fifth-best score in DC’s indoor history with a throw of 34-04.00 in the shot and rounded out the night with a throw of 37-00.50 in the weight throw.

Amanda Tooley took 13th in the shot put, and recorded the seventh-best throw in DC’s indoor history with a toss of 33-01.75. Laura Derov was 16th in the shot (32-01.50) and 15th in the weight throw (30-11.75) and Jessica Lipstraw took 18th in the shot put with a throw of 31-05.25.

Mark Leugers led the men by advancing to the finals in the 55-meter dash and placing seventh in the long jump competition with a leap of 19-09.50. Leugers turned in the ninth-best time in DC’s indoor history in the 55-meter finals with a time of 6.86 to finish eight overall and posted the seventh-best jump in DC’s indoor history.

Defiance also got strong performances from Alan Thompson and Trevor Matuszak as Thompson finished third in the triple jump with a score of 39-06.00 and Matuszak took fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 46-09.50. That throw was the second best in DC’s indoor history, behind Matuszak’s personal best of 50-03.25.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Friday when they compete at the Cedarville Invitational.
