Yellow Jackets Impress in Field Events at ONU

ADA, Ohio – Defiance turned in one of its best performances of the indoor season on Friday night at Ohio Northern as the men placed third as a team, while the women ended the night in fifth position. Trevor Matuszak and Samantha Higdon backed up their All-Ohio performances by taking first place in their respective weight throws and numerous other Yellow Jackets recorded top-five efforts.

The men racked up 77 team points by dominating the field events and finished ahead of Adrian, Bluffton, Wilmington and Tri-State in the standings.

Matuszak’s score of 52-03.75 in the weight throw set a new school record for indoor and gave DC its lone event championship on the men’s side.

Defiance picked up a trio of top-five finishes in the triple jump as Mark Leugers took second with a jump of 41-01.00 while Audric Warren and Brad Zarembski earned third and fifth.

Leugers added two more top-five finishes with a fourth in the 55-meter race and a third in the long jump.

The Jackets took third and fourth in the high jump as Eric Swartz and Zarembski each jumped 6-02.00 and Matt Fosnaugh and Kallin St. John also recorded top-five performances as Fosnaugh took fifth in the pole vault with a score of 13-06.25 and St. John ended fifth in the shot with a throw of 42-05.25.

The Lady Jackets also performed well in the field events and were led by Higdon’s championship toss of 41-02.25 in the weight throw.

Kristyn Tooley picked up second in the triple jump with a total score of 31-10.00 and Julie Kern took sixth in the high jump with a leap of 4-08.25.

A pair of Jackets placed in the shot put competition as Laura Derov took sixth with a throw of 35-10.50 and Higdon’s 34-10.25 effort was good for eighth.

Defiance will continue its indoor season with another meet at Ohio Northern on Feb. 23.
