Zarembski and Matuszak Hit NCAA Provisional Mark

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Defiance College opened up its indoor track & field season at the Tom Wright Classic this weekend with several record-setting performances.

2007 All-American Brad Zarembski picked up where he left off last season as his winning jump of 6-07.00 set a new school indoor record, while also clearing the NCAA Div. III provisional mark. Zarembski also picked up a first-place finish in the triple-jump with a leap of 41-04.25. Senior Trevor Matuszak also qualified provisionally in the opening meet of the season, finishing second in the weight throw with a DC indoor record toss of 55-03.00.

Freshman Ryan Perry started his collegiate career off with a bang, winning both the 60m and the 200m dash. Perry finished the 60m dash in a time of 7.14 seconds, while using a strong kick to complete the 200m dash in 23.80 seconds. Eric Swartz had a pair of second place finishes on the day, clearing 6-05.0 in the high jump and finishing the 60m hurdles in 9.31 seconds. Eddie Mason and Marlon McGowan finished second with a time of 3:35.04.

Samantha Higdon led the way on the women’s side as her fourth-place toss of 48-06.00 was just short of the NCAA provisional mark. Laura Derov finished fifth in the shot put with a toss of 37-05.25, while Courtney Lantz and Amanda Zimmerman were sixth and seventh in the 600m with times of 1:53.07 and 1:54.61. Kristen Goldstein placed seventh in the 60m crossing the line in 8.54.

Defiance returns to action next Saturday, February 2 at the Taylor Invitational in Upland, Ind.
