DC Women Claim First-Place After Opening Day

ANDERSON, Ind. – The Defiance College women’s track & field team is in first-place after the opening day of the two-day HCAC Championships. The Lady Jackets accrued 63 points through the first five events, leading second-place Anderson University by 12.5 points.

Emily Cole gave DC its first event title of the meet in the women’s pole vault, clearing 9-08.00 to set a new school record. Courtney Lantz finished third after clearing 9-02.25, edging out fellow Pettisville High School alum Alex Thiel who finished fourth. Thiel also scored in the triple jump as her leap of 32-08.25 earned her a third-place finish.

Defiance’s throwing events also had a strong start, tallying 36 points through the first two events of the meet for the Lady Jackets. Samantha Higdon (136-11.00), Amanda Tooley (134-08.00) and Laura Derov (132-08.00) finished 2-3-4 for DC in the hammer throw. Holly Stein earned a second-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 39-00.25, while Derov (38-08.75) and Tooley (37-00.50) finished third and sixth respectively.

Cole cleared a school-record mark to win the pole vault.

Kristin Goldstein qualified for the finals in both the 100m and 200m, while Bria Gendron qualified in the 100m as did Amanda Zimmerman in the 800m.

The final day of the HCAC Championships will kick-off tomorrow, Saturday, April 26 at 10:00 a.m. on the campus of Anderson University.
