DC vs. Shawnee State Box / DC vs. Marietta Box

DEFIANCE, Ohio – Danyel Lipps recorded her third and fourth double-double performances of the 2007 Defiance College Invitational, but the Yellow Jackets fell 3-1 to Shawnee State and 3-2 to Marietta. Lipps was named to the Rogliatti’s All-Tournament Team.

Huntington College swept past John Carroll and Bluffton to claim the team championship by going 4-0 over the weekend. HC’s Kayla Cervenka was named as the Scotty’s Club 111 Most Valuable Player.

Joining Lipps and Cervenka on the All-Tournament Team were Huntington’s Stephanie Stearns, Bluffton’s Kayla Pickering, Concordia’s Erin Walczak, John Carroll’s Meredith McDiarmid, Marietta’s Marissa Barnhart and Shawnee State’s Becca Day.

Lipps had 76 kills, 60 digs and 15 aces in four tournament matches.

The Yellow Jackets got off to a strong start in the 9:00 am match, taking the first set against Shawnee State by a 30-26 score. SSU rallied back behind team hitting performances of .458 and .500 percent in games two and four and took the match 26-30, 30-19, 30-16, 30-16.

Lipps and Sara Porter each notched 14 kills and recorded double-figure digs, while Lauren Aldridge went for 13 kills.

Chelsea Howard and Heather Koehler combined for 33 of SSU’s 66 kills and Haley Halcomb tossed up 49 assists to pace the Bears’ offensive attack.

Lipps posted her sixth double-digit kills total in seven matches, leading DC against Marietta in the second match of the afternoon with 18 kills. Porter turned in another double-double with 13 kills and 16 digs and Heather Bradshaw led all players with 28 digs.

The strong performances would not be enough to get Defiance past the Pioneers however, as Marietta edge the Jackets for a 21-30, 30-22, 30-16, 26-30, 15-6 victory.

Defiance (2-5) will be back in action on Tuesday night when it hosts Heidelberg at 7:00 pm.
