Jackets Fall in First Round of HCAC Tournament

HANOVER, Ind. – Defiance College saw its season come to a close on Saturday with a four-set loss to the third seeded Manchester Spartans in the opening round of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.

Manchester drew first blood by winning the opening set, 30-23, before DC bounced back to even things at one set apiece with a 30-27 victory in the second set. The Spartans took over from that point on, scoring 30-22 and 30-15 wins to take the match.

Danyel Lipps led all players with 21 kills for her third 20-plus kill performance of the season, but the Spartans placed four players in double figures and hit .265 as a team to power past the Jackets.

Lipps also recorded 17 digs for her 16th double-double of the year and Sara Porter registered her 19th double-double of the season with a 12-kill, 11-dig performance. Kelsey Ferguson tossed up 43 assists and added 12 digs and Heather Bradshaw had 20 digs.

Lipps led all players with 21 kills and added 17 digs.

Defiance closes the season with an 8-22 record overall and finishes sixth in the HCAC. The Jackets are set to return all 11 players from their 2007 roster.
