DC Volleyball geared up for postseason play
Nick Williams, Assistant SID
DEFIANCE, Ohio - In a season full of ups and downs for Defiance College Volleyball team, the Yellow Jacket squad gets a fresh start with all teams back to 0-0, as DC gets ready to head back to Cincinnati and take part in the HCAC Tournament this Saturday.
The Jackets (9-19, 3-5 HCAC) enter Saturday’s postseason berth after a decisive win over Bluffton University Tuesday evening that sent the team into the postseason. DC was tied with Bluffton for the final seed entering the match, setting up a do-or-die matchup against the two conference foes with a playoff spot on the line.
The Yellow Jackets will face off against Anderson University (23-8, 6-2 HCAC), who defeated Defiance on October 3 in straight sets. Before that match, DC had won the previous two meetings against the Ravens, with a 3-0 win on October 12, 2004 and a 3-1 victory on October 4, 2005.
In last year’s HCAC Tournament, Defiance eliminated Transylvania University and Franklin College to advance all the way to the finals against Mount St. Joseph. Although the Lions eventually defeated DC in the matchup, the Jackets look to get back to that same position and come back home with an HCAC championship.
During the regular season, Danielle Rego led DC in kills with 290, her second consecutive season with 200+ kills. Ashton Judis and Brittany Cooley, who split time at the setter position, finished first and second in assists with 755 and 306, respectively. Diane Bruns was the team leader in digs with 595, while Corrie Farley, who finished one dig shy of 500, became DC’s all-time leader in digs and games played. Farley’s career totals currently stand at 1,679 digs and 410 games played.
Game time between Defiance and Anderson is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The winner will face #2 seed Hanover at 7:00 p.m.
