Yellow Jackets Fall in Home Opener

Nick Williams, Assistant SID

--Defiance, Ohio—
The DC Yellow Jackets could not win their fifth consecutive home opener as Defiance falls to Heidelberg, 30-25, 30-24, 20-30, 30-22. This is only the first time in five years that Defiance has lost to Heidelberg.

The Yellow Jackets could not seem to find the open floor during the match, as Heidelberg played a strong defensive game. In the third set, it looked as if Defiance was on the verge of a comeback, as the Yellow Jackets began to play in sync and find their rhythm. However, in the fourth set, Heidelberg's defense proved too much for the Yellow Jackets, as Defiance hit .124 for the match.

Julie Steineman, the HCAC Player of the Week, led the team in kills for the fifth straight match with 12, while Danielle Rego and Jill Evans also added seven each. The three also reached double digits in blocks, Steineman had 14, Rego had 12, and Evans with 10. Evans also served up 18 assists, while Brittney Cooley dished out 16 of her own. Three Yellow Jackets wound up with double-digit digs, namely Jill Evans with 15, and Diane Bruns and Corrie Farley with 13 apiece.

Defiance College plays host to six teams that will participate in the DC Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Yellow Jackets' first match is against Geneva on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
