DC Hires Doumanian as Women's Basketball Head Coach

DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College announced on Thursday that it has hired Dic Doumanian as the new head coach of the women’s basketball program. Doumanian will begin as the head coach on August 1.

DC Athletic Director, Dr. Dick Kaiser, announced Doumanian’s hiring saying, “I am excited about having Coach Doumanian on our staff. He brings over 16 years of collegiate coaching experience, which includes the past seven years as a head coach. The past three years Coach ‘D’ has put up some gaudy numbers by going 68-27 and getting his team to the national tournament.”

“It is important to this program that we continue to seek a high level of excellence because our players, their parents and our fans expect it.”

Doumanian brings 19 years of basketball coaching experience on several levels with him to Defiance and posted a career head coaching mark of 120-82 during seven years at the helm of the Kellogg Community College women’s basketball program.

Doumanian is a two-time MCCAA Coach of the Year.
“I am really excited about this great opportunity to be part of the fine tradition of women’s basketball here at Defiance College,” Doumanian stated. “My goal is that we will have a team each year that the campus and community can be proud of both on and off the court.”

While at Kellogg Community College, Doumanian led his Lady Bruins to a great deal of success in the classroom and on the court. In three of Doumanian’s seven seasons at KCC, the women’s basketball team led the entire athletic program in team grade-point average. The Bruins excelled on the hardwood as well, going 24-7 in 2006-07 en route to winning their second Michigan Community College Athletic Association Championship in the past three seasons. The first championship came at the end of a 30-5 campaign in 2004-05, which saw the Bruins make their first appearance in the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament in school history. Each MCCAA Championship resulted in Doumanian being selected as the league’s Coach of the Year.

During his seven years as a head coach at KCC, Doumanian’s teams became known for their up-tempo style which placed them among the top ten teams in the nation in scoring in each of the past three seasons. In 2006-07, the Lady Bruins had four players average in double figures while netting 77.9 points per contest and holding the opposition to just 61.4.

Prior to taking over the reigns of the program at Kellogg Community College, Doumanian spent time as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s basketball teams at IPFW from 1991-1997, and had brief stints on the coaching staffs at Mercyhurst College and Clarion University.

Along with a lengthy coaching background, Doumanian has also worked as an athletic director, sports information director and a college professor.

The Livonia, Mich., native graduated from Michigan State with a degree in journalism, before earning a master’s degree in education from Clarion University of Pennsylvania in 1990.

“When we look to replace a coach in a high profile sport like the Lady Jacket basketball program, there are certain program and character specifics that we deem important,” Kaiser said. “Coach Doumanian not only brings a winning attitude and extensive background of experience, but also he brings a high level of maturity and genuine calmness that sometimes less experienced coaches just have not gained yet. There is no doubt Coach ‘D’ is a great fit for our program, and we look to have Dic as our head coach for a long time.”

Doumanian will be taking over a Lady Jacket team which ended the 2006-07 season with a 14-11 overall record. That team did not have a single senior on the roster and saw Mandy White, Kayla Mengerink, Sarah Bird and Katie McNamara earn All-HCAC honors, with White being tabbed as the Freshman of the Year.
