Adrian then opened the spread to the 10-point cushion heading into the break by closing the half on a 10-1 rally.
The lead grew to as many as 13 at 37-24 with 15:05 to play in the game before Defiance began to chip into the lead and get back into the ballgame behind a barrage of three-pointers.
Bird got the rally started with a jumper and Mollie Patterson cut the deficit back to single digits with a three. Another shot from long distance out of the hands of Mengerink got the Jackets to within six at 43-37 with 9:49 to play and a Katie McNamara trey made it a 45-43 contest with 5:30 showing on the clock.
That was as close as Defiance would get however, as the host Adrian squad rattled off six-straight points and maintained the eight-point edge for the final margin of 60-52.
DC drained five-of-10 shots from long range in the second half and outscored Adrian by a 33-31 margin but could not overcome the cold shooting in the first half or the significant, 59-29, edge held by Adrian on the battle of the boards.
Adrian’s Ashley McClarren led all scorers with 20 points on eight-of-11 shooting from the floor and hauled in 13 points.
Mengerink paced DC with 14 points and three steals while Bird added 13 points and picked off four steals. Hickman tossed in nine points and Sara Jacobs and Mandy White each pulled down seven rebounds.
Defiance (8-4) will look to get back in the win column on Saturday when it hosts Capital at 3:00 pm.
