Savard, Gerding, and VanderHorst named All-HCAC
DEFIANCE, Ohio Junior Meghann Savard, along with seniors Meta Gerding and Kelly VanderHorst have been named to the All-Heartland Conference Basketball team, while freshman Kayla Mengerink was named a member of the All-Freshman Team.
Savard, a native of St. Ignace, Michigan, headlined the DC attack in 2005, averaging 18.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. The forward passed the 1,000-point career scoring mark this season, setting DC single-season records for free throws made (148) and attempted (195). She hit 57% of her shots and dished-out 48 assists from the block.
An Ottoville, Ohio product, Gerding ended her Lady Jacket career by scoring 12.6 points and hauling-in 6.3 rebounds per contest. The shooting guard hit 41% of her three-point attempts and shot 77% from the free-throw line. The senior was often too valuable to take out, averaging 36.6 minutes-per-game during the 04-05 season.
VanderHorst, from Celina, Ohio, provided a great inside-out threat for DC, scoring 10.5 points per game, while leading the team with 6.8 rebounds per game. The forward was also second on the team in assists with 65, while leading the squad with 49 steals.
Mengerink came into the season with a difficult task, assuming the floor-general responsibilities in her rookie season. The Napoleon High School graduate helped DC to a 10-4 conference mark, while averaging 6.4 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.
The Lady Jackets ended the year with a 14-11 record overall, and finished second to Franklin College in the HCAC regular season race.
FC’s Lindsey Roberson was named the HCAC Most Valuable Player, while her coach Kim Eller earned Coach of the Year honors. Krystal Clack of Mt. St. Joseph was named the Freshman of the Year in the Heartland Conference.
Franklin won the conference tournament this past weekend before falling at Calvin College (Mich.) in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
