ANDERSON, Ind. – The Defiance College Lady Jacket Basketball Team remains winless in conference play after falling to Anderson University Wednesday evening by the score 67-61.

The two teams traded baskets on the first two possessions, as the score remained tied for the first two and a half minutes of play. After a couple of three-pointers and layups underneath over a three-minute span, the Jackets found themselves in an eight-point hole. DC would come within two halfway through the period, but could not bring it any closer in the half, as the Ravens brought the lead back to eight to make it 20-12 with 7:42 left to play in the half. After two Jacket baskets brought the team within four, Anderson, closed the half on a 18-8 run to take a 38-24 lead going into the second period.

The second half saw Anderson maintain its double-digit lead throughout most of the beginning of the second half. Trailing 50-41 with 12 minutes to go, the Jackets sank some timely buckets to bring them within two at the 5:37 mark. With the deficit still at two with three minutes left, DC could not get the crucial defensive stop, as Anderson made three consecutive field goals to stretch the lead to eight with 49 seconds left to play. Although a Kara Jones three-pointer cut the gap to four with four seconds left, two Raven free throws would seal the Jackets’ fate.

Meghann Savard led the Jackets with 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting, while grabbing four rebounds, two blocks and three steals. Three other Jackets reached double-digits in scoring, including Kayla Mengerink (13 points, three rebounds), Sarah Grime (10 points, five rebounds), and Kara Jones (10 points, six assists).

Defiance, now 3-13 overall and 0-5 in the HCAC, host Hanover Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in a men’s/women’s basketball doubleheader.
