Buffalo State scored the first basket of the game, but Kayla Mengerink would knot the game at two with a jumper at the 17:49 mark. Two minutes later, Sarah Bird knocked down two free throws to give the Lady Jackets a lead that the would never relinquish.
DC maintained a steady lead throughout most of the first half, but a 14-7 run over the last 4:28 stretched the advantage to 18 as the Jackets went into the half up 32-18.
In the second half, Buffalo State was unable to shrink the deficit to closer than 13, as DC held the Bengals to 38% shooting from the field in the game.
Tough defense from Defiance and Buffalo State led to a scrappy contest which saw 23 steals combined from the two teams.
Mengerink led DC in scoring with 14 points with two assists and three steals. Mandy White narrowly missed her second double-double in three games, finishing with eight points and 10 rebounds. Sarah Grime came close to a double-double as well, with eight points and nine rebounds, including a season-high seven offensive boards.
DC (6-3, 2-2 HCAC) will take on Notre Dame College of Ohio in the final game of the classic, with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
