Lady Jacket Basketball drops season opener

DANVILLE, Ky.-- The DC Lady Jacket Basketball Team drops their first game of the 2005-06 season, falling to Centre College at Danville, Kentucky Friday evening by the score 58-64.

The first half saw a very close game between the two teams, as evidenced by the four ties and five lead changes. By the end of the first half, DC took a 30-29 lead going into the second half. Beginning the half on a 13-7 run, the Jackets took a six point lead nine minutes into the second frame. The Colonels would eventually tie the game at 46, and take a 48-46 lead at the 6:34 mark. The next four minutes of play saw three ties and three lead changes. With 1:28 left to play, the Colonels regained the lead at 56-54 and would never trail for the rest of the game en route to the six-point win.

Senior Meghann Savard recorded her first double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Sophomore Sarah Bird led the Jackets in scoring with 19 on 8-of-13 shooting to go along with her three rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Kayla Mengerink contributed eight points and four steals.

The Jackets next take on Marian College at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday as they continue play in the Centre College’s Country Hearth/Lee’s Famous Recipe Tournament.
