Second Half Woes Plague Jackets in Loss at Franklin

FRANKLIN, Ind. – Defiance was outscored by 18 in the final period, falling 73-61 to Franklin University on Wednesday, January 16. DC falls to 2-4 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference with the loss.

The Jackets silenced the home crowd early as Tasha Stucke’s three-pointer at the midway point of the first half gave DC a 22-8 advantage. The Grizzlies clawed their way right back into the game behind the scoring of Heather Harper and Courtney Swain who combined to pour in the next 11 points of the contest to draw Franklin within three, 22-19. After Franklin tied the game at 25 three minutes later, Defiance would score the last six points of the first half to go into the break with a 31-25 lead.

The second half belonged to Franklin who outscored the Lady Jackets 48-30 in the half as Heather Harper would score 17 of her game-high 30 points to lead the Grizzlies.

Stucke scores career-high 14 points in loss.

Franklin was able to knock down key shots down the stretch, shooting over 50 percent in the second half. DC managed to connect on just seven-of-35 from the field in the period, but did hit 15 of its 22 free throw attempts.

Stucke led the Jackets with a career-high 14 points, knocking down two treys on the night. Amber Bailey and Mandy White each finished the game with a double-double. Bailey who came into the game averaging 11 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots in HCAC contests, dropped in 11 points to go along with her 10 boards, one block and two steals. White reached double-figures in scoring for the eighth time this season, while recording her second double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds as well as tallying five steals on the night. Sarah Bird scored all eight of her points from the charity stripe on a perfect 8-of-8 shooting, while also pulling down eight boards.

Defiance (6-7) returns to the Karl H. Weaner Center for the first time since January 2, when it faces HCAC foe Anderson University on Saturday, January 19. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
