DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Defiance College Lady Jacket Basketball win could not maintain its perfect 14-0 record against Hanover College as the Panthers downed the Jackets Saturday afternoon by the score 70-50.
Poor shooting in the first half put DC in a big hole, as the Jackets only shot 32% on 7-of-22 shooting. Hanover scored the first seven points of the game and began the game on a 13-4 run. DC did cut the deficit to three, making it 15-12, but could not come any closer than that for the rest of the game. Hanover took a 32-17 lead at the half, with 15 of those points coming off of eight DC turnovers.
DC shot much better in the second half, hitting 13 of 27 shots for a 48% clip. Nevertheless, the 15-point gap proved to be too much for Defiance to overcome. The Jackets never got any closer than 10, when the score was 37-27 with 15:42 left to play.
Meghann Savard led the Jackets with 13 points while also grabbing five rebounds. Kayla Mengerink also reached double-digits with 10 points and four steals. Sarah Grime scored three points and grabbed 11 boards. Hanover’s Susan Kolls led all scorers with 19.
Defiance (5-18, 2-10 HCAC) travels to Bluffton University Wednesday, while Hanover (14-8, 8-4 HCAC) takes on Mount St. Joseph at Cincinnati on Wednesday.
