Lady Jackets’ stretch of home opener wins come to an end

DEFIANCE, Ohio — The Defiance College Lady Jacket Basketball Team could not extend its streak of consecutive home opener wins to four, as the Lady Jackets fall to Heidelberg College Tuesday evening by the score of 73-53.

After a layup by Kayla Mengerink tied the game early at two, Heidelberg stormed out on a 23-5 run, led by a barrage of inside buckets and three point baskets. Again for DC, falling behind early proved to be downfall of the Lady Jacket squad. As Heidelberg spread their offense playing three around the arc, this resulted in a lot of three-point shots, as 14 of the Berg’s 30 field goals in the first half came from behind the arc. As Defiance struggled from the field in the first half, shooting under 30%, the team maintained its presence by staying aggressive inside, going 10-of-17 from the line in the first half.

In the second half, The Jackets were able to shake off their early struggles to buckle down and play their game. Though the team wasn’t able to cut the 21-point halftime deficit to more than 17, Defiance essentially stayed shot for shot with Heidelberg. Both teams made 12 field goals and went 5-of-6 from the line in the second half, as DC outscored the Berg 30-29. However, it could not help the Jackets climb out of an early hole.

Meghann Savard led DC for the second straight game in scoring with 21 to go along with two rebounds. Megan Myers dropped 10, grabbed five boards, and dished out four assists. Sarah Bird added five points and a steal.

Defiance will use the Thanksgiving break to rest, then travel to take on Notre Dame College Ohio on Saturday, December 2.
