Lady Jackets fall at Manchester

N. MANCHESTER, Ind.—The Defiance College Lady Jackets were handed their second conference loss by the Manchester College Spartans, 47-58, at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena on Wednesday night.

Kelly VanderHorst led the DC with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Meghann Savard and Kayla Mengerink each added 10. MC’s Erica Sewell led all performers with 30 points and 10 rebounds.

Defiance found themselves trailing 27-21 at the half after falling behind by 10 at the 13-minute mark of the first half. A Mengerink jumper with 1:48 left brought the Spartan lead back down to four, but the Jackets were unable to ever gain the lead in the contest.

A Savard free throw made the score 38-39 with seven minutes left in the game before a Manchester built a five-point lead that was, again, eventually cut to three on another pair of free throws by Savard. Defiance, however, gave up a 15-7 run in the final four-minutes of the game to fall to 11-8 on the season and 7-2 in the HCAC.

The Lady Jackets now sit one game behind conference-leading Transylvania and will next host the Mt. St. Joseph Lions on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
