Savard scores 1,000th point in DC loss

DEFIANCE, Ohio—Junior Meghann Savard scored her 1,000th career point and led the Defiance College Lady Jackets with 25 points despite DC falling to the visiting Lions of Mt. St. Joseph, 67-73 on Saturday afternoon.

The St. Ignace, Michigan native also had two boards and two assists in the game, while Meta Gerding and Kayla Mengerink added 16 and 10 points, respectively. Kelly VanderHorst and Megan Myers tied for the team-high in rebounds with six each. All five Lion starters scored in double-figures with Krystal Clark’s 16 points leading the way.

Savard’s 1,000th point came on a lay-up with six-minutes remaining with an added free-throw after a foul by MSJ’s Katie Swart to make the score 54-56. Savard, again, cut the lead to two, 61-63, with 2:45 left, but a triple by Clark put the game in the hands of the Lions and sent DC to their ninth loss of the year as they now sit at 11-9 overall and 7-3 in the HCAC.

The Lady Jackets hit their first three three-point attempts of the game with Kara Jones hitting two and Gerding sinking one. However, Defiance hit just one of the last 16 long-distance attempts, while being outrebounded 39-32 in the contest. The Lions out ran the Jackets, scoring 14 fast-break points, while DC was shut-out in transition.

Mount took a 33-28 lead into the halftime break, after grabbing the lead at the 12-minute mark on an Emily Day triple. DC would be unable to regain the lead for the rest of the game as they were outscored in the paint, 36-44.

Defiance College will next travel to Anderson University on Wednesday to face the Ravens at 6:30 p.m.
