CINCINNATI, Ohio - The DC Lady Jacket Basketball Team could not overcome a seven-point halftime deficit as the team drops another conference matchup, this time against the College of Mount St. Joseph Saturday afternoon by the score 53-61.
The Jackets did not get off to a good start, as the team missed its first three field goals en route to a 9-0 deficit in the first three minutes of the game. DC was able to shrink the gap to make it 11-7, then later 17-15 at the 8:30 mark. Yet the Jackets could not could any closer than two, as the two teams traded baskets over the next two minutes, with the Lions maintaining a 23-19 edge with under six minutes to play in the half. DC would not come any closer than six in the half and eventually trailed 32-25 to begin the second period.
Although the Lions score the first basket of the half, DC put five points on the board in one minute to cut the gap to four. However, a two-minute stretch that saw missed jumpers on both ends finally ended with a Lion layup, bringing the lead back to six. At the 9:33 mark, the Lions held a nine-point advantage, which Defiance quickly erased to only three on baskets by Sarah Bird and Meghann Savard. Yet once again, DC could not gain the lead, as the Mount took a 47-40 lead with 5:20 left to play. DC made one last stand, as a three-point by Bird and a layup by Savard brought DC within two with under four minutes to play. However, the Mount would not let DC gain the lead, as the Lions closed the game on a 14-8 run.
Savard led the Jackets in scoring with 16, but attempted only one free throw, compared to her 7.67 average per game. Sarah Grime came one rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with 11 points and nine boards. Bird also scored in double-digits, with 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting behind the arc and 2-for-2 at the line. Mount St. Joseph’s Shanika Logan led all scorers with 17.
Defiance (5-16, 2-8 HCAC) hosts Anderson University Wednesday evening at 7:30. The Mount (8-13, 5-5 HCAC) travels to Bluffton University Wednesday.
