Strong second half rally pushes Lady Jackets past Myers

DEFIANCE, Ohio - With a 57-point effort in the second half, the Defiance College Women’s Basketball team was able to erase a first half deficit to beat Myers University by the score 86-60 on Wednesday evening.

The Lady Jackets found themselves struggling in the first half, shooting only 36% from the field in the half. Conversely, Myers had the touch with a 48% clip in the period, yet going into the intermission the Mustangs only held a 34-29 advantage.

Things turned around dramatically for the Lady Jackets after the break, as DC came out in the second half with a torrid shooting performance. Defiance began the period shooting 81%, hitting 18 of the first 21 shots of the half to take a 81-51 lead.

The highlight of DC’s shooting clinic was a four-point play by Stephanie Lieto, who sank a three pointer in the corner with Myers’s Arielle Arthur barreling down on her. Lieto’s free throw capped off a 19-6 run to begin the half.

The Jackets finished the period shooting 63% from the field and 64% from three-point range.

Sarah Bird had the hottest hand for DC, scoring 20 points in the half on 7-of-8 shooting. She finished with a team-high 25 points with three assists and two steals.

Mandy White had her third double-double of the season, finishing the game with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Kayla Mengerink also chipped in with 16 points and seven assists. Kimmy Taylor contributed five points and seven rebounds in eight minutes of action

Myers’s Telitha Davis was the game’s high scorer with 32 points and nine rebounds and four steals.

Defiance (8-3, 2-2 HCAC) will get to enjoy the holiday season and take the next week off before hitting the road next Thursday to take on Adrian College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
