Lady Jackets sweep Classic, White named MVP

DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Defiance College Women’s Basketball team rode a 21-point performance by Mandy White to a 71-52 win over Notre Dame College of Ohio to sweep both its games of the 2006 Hubbard Company/PRO REHAB Defiance Clinic Women’s Basketball Collegiate Classic.

Both teams traded baskets for the first six minutes of the game, with DC hold a slim 10-9 lead. Yet a 13-4 run by the Lady Jacket stretched the lead to 12, en route to a 31-21 lead. White proved to be a force down low for DC, scoring 17 in the half on 8-of-10 shooting.

In the second half, the Jackets kept control of the game, not allowing the Falcons to cut the lead to closer than seven. Sarah Bird was the main offensive threat for DC in the half, scoring 11 points in the period.

White, who finished with 21 points and six rebounds, earned her second tournament MVP honor of the season. For the classic, White averaged 14.5 points and eight rebounds.

Kayla Mengerink and Katie McNamara each were named to the all-classic team. Mengerink finished the game with 10 points, six assists, and four points. McNamara added 11 points, six rebounds, and four assists.

The four remaining members of the all-classic team were Notre Dame’s Amanda Brown and Christine Hastings, Anderson’s Kayla Martin, and Darnika Moseley of Buffalo State.

Defiance (7-3, 2-2 HCAC) will host Myers University this Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
