Lady Jackets fall despite a 22-point comeback
Nick Williams, Assistant SID
DEFIANCE, Ohio Despite a valiant comeback attempt by the entire team, the Defiance College Lady Jacket Basketball Team could not pull out the victory as the team fell to Ohio Northern University by the score 62-51 Wednesday evening.
The night began with what has become a recurring theme for DC, a lack of shooting. ONU jumped out to an early 7-0, which was later cut to 13-5. At this point, the Polar Bears went on an offensive tear, going on a 17-0 run. After a Meghann Savard layup ended the scoring drought, the Jackets found themselves in a 30-7 hole. After a Polar Bear three-pointer, the Jackets buckled down defensively and mounted a comeback of their own, closing out the half on a 15-2 run to bring Defiance within 13.
The second half opened up with a much more inspired effort on the part of both teams, as the Jackets and the Polar Bears traded baskets over an eight-minute span. With 12 minutes left to play, ONU held a 49-33 lead over the Jackets, but this lead would not last. Lead by a focused Savard and Megan Myers, the Lady Jackets would shrink the 16-point deficit to only four over the eight-and-a-half minute period. During the 18-6 scoring run, Savard scored seven and Myers five. Unfortunately, this was the closest Defiance would come as the Polar Bears pulled away, finishing the game on a 7-0 run of their own.
Savard notched her second 20-point effort of the season; this time with a season-high 23 points to go along with six rebounds and three blocks. Myers added eight points and six rebounds, while Kara Jones poured in six points, four rebounds, and five assists of her own. Sarah Bird chipped in nine points and three assists off the bench.
The Lady Jackets travel to Illinois to participate in the Olivet Nazarene Tournament this weekend. After that, Defiance hosts three teams next Friday and Saturday in the Hubbard Company/PRO REHAB Classic. DC tips off against Marygrove Friday, December 16th at 8:00 p.m.
