Defiance vs. Rose-Hulman Box Score
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Defiance College Women’s Basketball team was unable to avenge a three-point loss to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology earlier in the season as the Lady Jackets fell to the Engineers Saturday afternoon by the score 61-77.
DC got off to a strong start in the game, scoring the first basket of the game on a Katie McNamara jumper. Although Rose tied the game on a pair of free throws, the Jackets were still able to regain and maintain a lead through most of the first half of the period.

At the 13-minute mark, the Jackets held a 14-6 advantage and was doing an excellent job defensively on Rose. Up to that point, DC held the Engineers to only 1-of-7 shooting, with the rest of their points coming on free throws. However, Rose was able to get back in gear offensively and stormed out on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to take a four-point advantage.
Although DC closed the gap to one to make it 20-19 with eight to play in the half, the Jackets were unable to retake the lead, as Rose closed out with a 20-14 run to go into the intermission up by seven.
The second half of play saw the Lady Jackets come out with intensity, holding the Engineers to only two points over the first five and a half minutes. Coupled with DC’s ability to convert its offense opportunities, the end result was a 43-43 tie at the 14-minute mark.
Yet much like the first half, the Engineers responded with a rapid scoring outburst, putting up an eight spot over the two minutes before the Jackets were able to sink a basket of their own.
A three-point play by Kim Zura was able to shrink the gap to 53-47 with 11:49 to play. Unfortunately for DC, this would be the closest the team would come for the rest of the game. A 12-6 Engineer run stretched their lead to 15 with 5:41 left, and would never let its advantage slip lower than 13 until the end.
Both teams shot fairly well from the field, with DC going for 42.6% in the game and Rose at 48.8%. However, the discrepancy in free throw shooting proved to be a major factor in the game, as the Engineers went 30-of-36 from the charity stripe including a 13-of-14 performance by Suzy Carlson. In comparison, the Lady Jackets converted 10 of their 14 shots from the line.
Katie McNamara had a stellar performance for DC, with a season-high 21 points, including a 5-for-10 mark from three-point range, also a season-high in threes made. Sarah Grime provided a spark from the bench, scoring 16 with three boards. Kayla Mengerink added four points, five rebounds, and six assists.
Defiance (13-10, 6-8 HCAC) will finally return home from its four-game road trip Wednesday evening to take on Franklin College at 7:30 p.m.
