Savard named HCAC Player of the Week

DEFIANCE, Ohio-- Defiance College’s Meghann Savard (St. Ignace, Mich./LaSalle) is the second consecutive Lady Jacket to be named Heartland Conference Player of the Week in women’s basketball.

Savard follows teammate Meta Gerding’s previous honor by helping the Yellow Jackets to a pair of conference wins. The junior forward scored a game-high 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting in Defiance’s 58-51 win over Anderson on Jan. 19. She also added four rebounds. In the Yellow Jackets 57-42 win at Hanover on Jan. 22, Savard posted a game-high 17 points and eight rebounds. She finished 7-of-10 from the field against the Panthers.

The St. Ignace, Michigan product is leading the conference in scoring (19.6 ppg) and field goal percentage (59.45) this season. Defiance has won four straight games, moving into a three-way tie for first place in the HCAC at 5-1. The Yellow Jackets are 9-7 overall.

Savard has 939 career points and 313 season points. She is currently on pace to reach both the 1,000-career-point plateau and the top of the single-season DC scoring record (527- Lori Harris ‘85).

The Lady Jacket travel to Bluffton University for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off against the Beavers on Wednesday before hosting Franklin College on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
