Lady Jackets upset Pioneers

--Defiance, Ohio-- The Defiance College Lady Jackets (5-6, 1-0), led by Meghann Savard’s 26 points, upset Transylvania University (9-2, 0-1) on Wednesday night at the Karl H. Weaner Center.

Kelly VanderHorst led DC in rebounding with 10 boards, all in the second half, while Meta Gerding chipped in eight points and four rebounds. The Lady Jacket defense held TU to 34% shooting from the floor and outrebounded the Pioneers, 36-32. Defiance outscored the visitors 35-25 in the second half to earn the win.

After trailing 25-35 at the half, DC went on a 9-2 run to open the second period, spurred by a VanderHorst jumper and a Gerding lay-up. The score was tied seven times in the game, six times in the second half as the teams battled down the stretch. TU took a five point lead a Haley Riney triple at the 10-minute mark.

Meghann Savard took control in the paint over the final eight minutes and gave DC the lead for good on a three-point play at the 3:30 mark. The lead grew to 57-48 before a late barrage by Transy to close the final gap to five, 60-55.

Defiance is now 5-6 on the year and begins the HCAC with an all-important win. The defeat was Transy’s second of the season, as they now sit at 9-2 and 0-1 in the conference.

DC will travel to Franklin College on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off with the Grizzlies.
