Lady Jackets fall to Transy on the road

Defiance vs. Transylvania Box Score

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Defiance College Women's Basketball was unable to erase a ten-point halftime deficit as the team fell to Transylvania University Saturday afternoon by the score 75-59.

Both teams came out playing intensely, with Transy scoring first on a three-pointer by Cindy Beavin. Katie McNamara answered with a three of her own, leading a scoring battle between both teams that saw four ties and four lead changes over the next four minutes.

At the 14:54 mark, Transy took a 12-11 lead which slowly stretched to ten with nine minutes to go in the half. A 9-2 DC run cut the gap to one, but the Pioneers closed out the half with a 10-1 run of their own to bring their lead back to ten.

In the second half, the Jackets had trouble cutting into Transy’s lead. DC could not come closer than seven in the half, bringing the score to 46-39 at the 15:19 mark. On the Pioneers next possession, Brittany Henderlight pushed the advantage back to ten with a three-pointer. The Pioneers held a double-digit lead throughout most of the half, going up by as much as 24 at one point.

Although the Jackets could not pull out the victory, the team went down swinging, ending the game on an 8-0 run while holding Transy scoreless over the final 4:55 of the game.

Kayla Mengerink led DC in scoring with 18 points and three assists. Mandy White had nine points, four rebounds, and a team-high four steals. Stephanie Lieto chipped in with eight points and two boards off the bench.

Defiance (10-6, 3-4 HCAC) continues its three-game road trip, heading to Franklin College Wednesday to take on the Grizzlies. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
