DC Picks Up First Win of 2007, Knocking Off Bethany 3-1

DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Defiance College Lady Jackets were able to even up their record (1-1) in the final game of the Defiance Classic, defeating the Bethany College Bisons 3-1.

The teams played to a draw for the first half of play. Goalie Andrea Galbraith (Medina, Ohio/Medina) had four saves during that span to help the Jackets keep Bethany off the board.

Defiance wasted no time breaking the scoreless tie as Kaitlin Monberg (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Crestwood) scored off an assist by Melissa Alston (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford) to give DC their first goal of the season just two minutes into the second half. Thirteen minutes later Bethany struck back, as Michelle McGinley took a pass from Jena Hatmaker and floated a shot past Galbraith to knot the game at one apiece. The rest of the game belonged to freshman Cherilyn Borkholder (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview), as she would score the final to goals for Defiance.

Five minutes after the Bisons tied the gamed, senior captain Michelle Kavanagh (Williamston, Mich./Williamston) dropped a pass into the box that allowed Borkholder to punch a shot past Bethany goalkeeper Courtney Teets. Borkholder broke free again with under ten minutes to play, adding an insurance goal and giving DC a 3-1 victory.

The victory moves the Lady Yellow Jackets to 1-1 on the season. DC will resume action on Saturday, September 8 when it travels to Kalamazoo for a non-league matchup. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
