DC Women's Soccer falls in OT
Nick Williams, Assistant SID

DEFIANCE, Ohio — A second half rally by the opposition negated a great first half of play, as the Defiance College Women’s Soccer team lost 5-4 in overtime to Rochester College.

Freshman Hannah Jones got DC off to a great start as she scored two goals within the first 10 minutes of the game. Lauren Ranalli would add another goal at the nine minute mark. Although Rochester would score in the 41st minute off of a deflection, Defiance still held a 3-1 lead entering the second half and appeared to be crusing to victory.

In the second half, junior Michelle Kavanagh made it 4-1 on a header off of a corner kick by senior Deirdre Trujillo less than two minutes into the period. Momentum was on DC's side until Rochester scored two goals in the 66th and 67th minute to bring the gap within one. DC was able to hold off Rochester's attack until Krystn Freeman scored the equalizer with only four minutes left to play in the half. In the overtime period, Rochester would complete the comeback when a deflected header by the DC defense bounced in the wrong direction and found its way to the back of the net for an own goal, giving Rochester the 5-4 win.

Both teams played a very physical game while the referees struggled to maintain control, as Rochester and Defiance combined for 33 fouls, three yellow cards, and one red card for Rochester. Jones led DC with two goals, while Kavanagh and Ranalli each had a goal apiece. Trujillo had two assists. Stacey Bosserman made seven saves on 12 shots.

Defiance (0-1-1) travels to Indiana as the team takes on Tri-State University Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
