-Defiance, Ohio- Defiance College Women’s Tennis Team has gained All-Academic Team recognition for the fifth straight year.

To achieve this honor, a team must maintain a 3.20 or better team Grade Point Average. With a cumulative-grade point average of 3.649, the Lady Jackets are one of only 45 teams out of the over 325 teams that complete in NCAA Division III tennis that earned national recognition for their efforts in the classroom.

Team members receiving this honor were: Seniors – Allison Scheu & Jodi Waidelich – Juniors – Kylee Von Deylen & Erin Williams – Sophomores – Tracy Dye & Sarah Shuff – Freshmen – Krysta Lankford & Abby Reichard. For senior Allison Scheu, this was her fourth straight year as All-Academic Team member. For Jodi Waidelich, who graduated in three years, it was her third year and also the third year for Junior – Kylee Von Deylen.

Six team members also achieved All-Scholar recognition. To achieve this, a student must maintain a 3.50 or better Grade Point Average for the current school year, be a member of the varsity team and must be enrolled at the present school for at least two semesters. Team members achieving this honor were: Allison Scheu, Jodi Waidelich, Kylee Von Deylen, Erin Williams, Traci Dye and Abby Reichard.

The 2003/04 team also led all campus sports teams with a cum GPA of 3.649. This was the third year in a row that the team has achieved this award.

At this year Purple & Gold Banquet, Junior – Kylee Von Deylen was the AAUW – Women’s Scholastic Athlete Award for achieving a cumulative GPA for her three years at Defiance College of 3.999. Along with Kylee, Jodi Waidelich, Allison Scheu, Erin Williams and Abby Reichard were recognized by the HCAC as All-Academic Athletes.

Head coach Greg Reineke sets the example for a team striving for perfection on and off the court. When players graduate from Defiance College they have more than the experience of playing, Reineke said. “They have the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the professional world. They also have the ability to play a game they can play the rest of their lives.”

The 2004 Yellow Jackets open there season September 4th, hosting Franklin College and Mt. St. Joe, both conference matches starting at 10 AM. The Jackets return to the classroom on August 31st.

VonDeylen/Scheu earn All-HCAC honors
Senior Allison Scheu and junior Kylee VonDeylen have been named to the 2003 all-conference team by the Heartland Conference. The pair that teamed at #1 doubles went 2-5 in the HCAC with a 3-9 record overall. Scheu finished the year 1-11 at #1 singles while VonDeylen went 6-6 at the #2 spot.
