Lady Jacket Tennis works with local elementary students

DEFIANCE, Ohio—The Defiance College women’s tennis team has worked with local elementary schools, tutoring students on various subjects, including the economy and business.

Currently at Slocum Elementary School in Defiance, Erin Williams, a Yellow Jacket senior, keeps up the practice. “It is fun to see the ideas that the students come up with,” the Hanover, Indiana native commented, referring to the vast ideas that surface in her lectures.

Williams instructs the Slocum fourth-grade class once a week, giving the students a good idea about the world of business and entrepreneurship.

Since 1997, when DC head women’s tennis coach, Greg Reineke introduced the program, over 2,300 students have been reached and over 100 student-athletes and volunteers have gained valuable experience with classroom practice.

Slocum Elementary principal Sheri Streyer commented on the Yellow Jackets’ interaction with the students. “We always enjoy having the DC students here. It has been completely beneficial for us as the instruction they give flows right in with our curriculum.”

Other Lady Jackets are involved with the program including Sarah Shuff, Amber Evans, Kylee VonDeylen, Abby Reichard, and Traci Dye.
